Struck from 0.0484 Troy oz. 900 fine gold, it was also the smallest gold coin ever produced by the Mint, measuring merely 13 mm in diameter, which is less than 75% of the Roosevelt Dime's 17.9 mm size! The series was short-lived, minted for only six years, from 1849 until 1854, at which time the design was slightly altered and the diameter increased to an easier to manage 15 mm. Mintage of this 1852 Type 1 Liberty Head Gold Dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint is reported to be 2,045,351. Stunning Patriotic Designs Chief Engraver James Barton Longacre. Lady Liberty is portrayed in a left facing pose on the obverse, her hair partially gathered, while several tendrils curl down her nape. The image is encircled by thirteen stars, with "LIBERTY" inscribed upon her beaded crown. The reverse features a laurel wreath surrounded by the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, " with "1 DOLLAR 1852" at the center.
